Kenwood TH-D7

The Kenwood has a built in TNC so you can plug it into a normal computer, & use either 1200/9600 Packet. This allows data packets to be transmitted enabling data to be used rather than voice communication. The radio runs around 6  Watts when running from a 12 Volt Supply. On the standard battery pack high power is about 4 Watts.

The group and many of its members use these radios as it has a dual VFO (it is possible to monitor 2 frequencies at once) this means you can use APRS and Voice on the same radio. The only problem can be that when you are in the middle of nowhere the output power just isn’t quite enough

Kenwood TM-D700e

The Kenwood mobile radio does the same as the handheld radio and much more but with the added advantage of a much higher power output 50 Watts on VHF and 35 Watts on UHF.

Garmin GPS III Plus

To be able to use APRS a capable GPS receiver is required. This takes your co-ordinates and sends a data packet containing the information which can be viewed on a compatible software program such as UI-View (see www.ui-view.org)Many other GPS’s are available but this is the one that we use within Thanet Raynet
